Possibly the most famous sofa ever, the iconic Chesterfield could be classified as a "legend" in the sofa-stakes, a classic that even hundreds of years on just can't date.
One of the theory's around the Chesterfield name is that it was thought to have originated from the 4th Earl of Chesterfield who back in the 17th century was honoured by a commissioned leather sofa. While its design has seen a few tweaks over the past 300 years its essence remains the same; low with rolled arms in equal height to its back, firm deep buttons in tufted myriads that give a quilted effect and all supported on wooden legs. It distinctive design is probably most associated in leather and in 19th century gentlemans' clubs and it is believed it was designed in such a fashion to allow for the men to sit straight in the sofa so the that their suits would not wrinkle.
Today the Chesterfield is a staple in stylish design. It has reemerged as a statement piece of furniture that will become a striking feature when incorporated into the design of any space. The beauty of the Chesterfield is that whether it is in its original vintage masculine form or a chic modern re-invention in plush soft velvets and coloured fabrics it will sit well in almost all design styles..and when mixed with cushions or contrasting art and fabrics will bring the "wow factor" to any eclectic space!
